To protect my mental and emotional health, I don't watch the news. If I watch the news, there must be severe weather on the way that I need to know about. I am privy to what's happening in the world only by way of social media or if someone asks me if I've heard about or seen something. I know it seems irresponsible, but that's a boundary I've created to protect my well-being.
